Glossary

  • Acrylic Media
    • is a newer media than oil paint (approximately fifty years old).
    • They are  NOT mixed with linseed oil or turpentine and the most modern of the acrylic paints are not carcinogenic as are oil paints, and the solvents used in finishing oil paintings.
    • Acrylic paints use many of the the same high quality powdered minerals as traditional oil paint. Acrylics have the ability to bond to many different surfaces, and mediums can be used to adjust their binding characteristics. Acrylic paint can change the sheen from gloss to matte, or can add iridescence or texture to the surface. They can also be used to build thick layers of paint: gel and molding paste mediums are sometimes used to create paintings with relief features that are literally sculptural..
    • They are the highest quality Professional Grade pigments that are available.
    • They are mixed with special non-toxic binders that dry faster, more flexible, and do not yellow like oil paints.
    • During commission sittings clients are not bothered by the smell of noxious linseed oil odors and flammable turpentine thinners.
    • Traditional oil paints are highly susceptible to cracking or crazing with hundreds of fine cracks that cannot be repaired occurring within a few years of completion.
    • Acrylic Paintings can be varnished and framed within days of completion.  Oil paintings can take several to many months to be cured enough to varnish .

  • Giclée {pronounced "Gi-clay"}
    • The term — from the French verb gicler meaning "to squirt, to spray".
    • The word giclée was coined by Jack Duganne to represent any digital print used as fine art. Its intent was to distinguish commercial digital prints from fine art prints. In much the same way that the word serigraph is used to denote a fine art silk screen print, the word giclée is to be used to denote a fine art digital print.
    • After the original is photographed digitally it is sent to a special kind of printer which uses archive quality inks and sprays them on canvas.
  • Giclée avec embellissement means that the artist added subtle changes or touches to the reproduction, and signed the piece individually.
    • The purchaser will have a limited edition (1-100) reproduction of the original that has been personalized by the artist.
